MAKING YOUR MAPS INTERACTIVE WITH PDFs

David Kraiker
Geographic Coordinator
Census Bureau – NYRCC

In the newer versions of ArcGIS the capacity exists to create layers when creating PDF maps.   These layered PDF maps can be used in an interactive fashion by the user.   This offers the end-user the option of turning layers on and off, searching, highlighting, and limited self-editing.   No special software other that Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat Professional is needed.   This type of mapping offers access to users who may not have the ability to access ArcGIS software, and who may not necessarily want a paper version.   David Kraiker from the Census Bureau will demonstrate how to use some of these maps and give some tips for creating them.

BNL Information

**Special Note**

If you are planning to attend the LIGIS spring conference next Friday, May 7, please be aware that major road work is planned to begin next week at the Main Gate to Brookhaven National Laboratory.

There will be a single lane of traffic entering the Lab after you leave the Visitors' Trailer; traffic is likely to be slow, especially before 9 am.

You will not be able to exit through the Main Gate.  The South Gate exit will take you to the LIE north service road; the North Gate will take you to the northbound William Floyd Parkway.

Please be extra cautious as you drive on site and carpool if you can.  Look for any LIGIS member who is a BNL employee (wearing a BNL ID badge) if you need help locating the alternative gates.

For more information, see http://www.bnl.gov/today/story.asp?ITEM_NO=1748

Security
Attendes need to bring a photo ID and check in at the Main Gate to get a temporary BNL ID and parking card for their dashboard.

Accessing the Internet at Brookhaven National Laboratory
(BNL Visitor Network)

Visitors with temporary BNL passes (i.e., vendors/ conference or special event attendees) have access to the Internet via Cisco wireless access points in Berkner Hall.

Quick Steps to connect to the Internet:

  • configure your client machine for DHCP
  • set DNS server to be obtained automatically
  • if needed, the outgoing SMTP server is: bnl.org
  • read on if you need more info…

What is the Visitor Network?

The BNL Visitor Network (VN) is designed to offer Internet connectivity to temporary visitors at BNL (i.e., vendors/ conference or special event attendees). This network is a dynamic host control protocol-only (DHCP-only) Internet Protocol (IP) network that is logically outside of the BNL perimeter firewall and outside the BNL.GOV domain.

  • The network address is: 192.203.218.0/24
  • The DNS name associated with this network is "BNL.ORG"

It is intended for use by transient users and is accessed only from public spaces around the campus.

For wireless connections:
The Visitor Network is available from Cisco wireless access points in Berkner Hall. Use all the DEFAULT settings on your pc wireless LAN card to access the wireless network there.

Registering your computer on the network:
When you connect to the Visitor Network, you will be prompted to register your computer.  You must register in order to use the network.  It may take several minutes for the request to be processed.  After you have successfully registered, you must use your computer at least every 10 minutes.  If the connection is idle for more than 10 minutes, it may be terminated and you will have to go through the process again.
